10 THINGS YOU CAN DO
(EVEN ON YOUR LUNCH HOUR)
- GO OUTSIDE. Simply changing your location from inside to outside is a great first step.
- GET WET. Jump in the pool, take a cold shower, run through the sprinklers with your kids. Water is a natural source of renewal from the earth.
- TAKE MENTAL PICTURES. Lose the technology. When you get the opportunity to get outside (even if it’s just on you lunch hour) give yourself a total break from screens. Find the sky. Locate the sun. Look for grass or natural elements on the ground.
- TOUCH THE EARTH. Dr. Mary Rondeau says, “Connecting directly with the Earth helps keep the energy flowing freely. I am often found with no shoes (particularly walking around the neighborhood or my yard) and I encourage my kids to do the same.”
- LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS. Find a patch of grass or lean on a tree. Close your eyes and hear the breeze blowing through the leaves of the trees. Feel the wind move through your hair and over your skin. What else do you hear? Name the sounds.
- SMELL TREE BARK. If you can locate a tree, run your hands over the bark. Notice if there are different species of trees in your area. Did you know the bark of a Ponderosa Pine smells like vanilla?
- SOAK UP THE SUN. Dr. Mary Rondeau tells us the best source of vitamin D is the sun. We always recommend a natural sunscreen, but actually moving from the shade to the sun can be beneficial to your physical and mental health.
- MOVE YOUR BODY. Enjoy all of the ways that your body is able to move. Stretch your arms and legs. Take a hike. Walk to get the mail. Take a quick jog around the block.
- GIVE THANKS. As you observe the natural world around you. Remember to acknowledge gratitude for all of the ways you benefit from nature.
- HAVE A PICNIC. Eat your lunch mindfully, acknowledging that each bite you take was given from the earth.
Grounding yourself in nature does not have to be complicated. The suggestions on our list are simple enough to accomplish one or all of them on your lunch hour. They can be done alone or while connecting with others. And the benefits of grounding yourself in nature will do wonders for your mental health!
